"Oil On Canvas 17th Century Workshop Of Guido Reni (1585-1642)"
We present a version of the famous painting by Guido RENI that he painted in 1638. It represents Salome holding the head of Saint John the Baptist. This painting relates a biblical scene from the New Testament, Herod had Saint John the Baptist arrested and put in prison because of Herodias, wife of Philip his brother because John told him, "it is not possible to have her for a wife." He wanted to kill him but he was afraid of the crowd because they regarded John as a prophet. Then they celebrated King Herod's birthday, Herodias's daughter danced in front of all the guests and pleased Herod, he promised to give her whatever she wished for and at the instigation of her mother she asked for the head of Saint John the Baptist here on a platter. The king saddened but because of his oath and his guests, he ordered that John beheaded in his prison and that his head be brought back to him. He gave it to the girl who took it to her mother (Gospel according to Saint Matthew). Our painting is undoubtedly a version of the initial painting because Guido RENI was a compulsive gambler and was often faced with financial difficulties despite the high price of his works, which is why he asked his students to copy his works to increase his business volume. Our painting is quite small in size 24 x 20 cm, it is absolutely in its original condition and has never been restored or cleaned since the 17th century. Shipping extra (E25)
