Spanish Colonial School (c. 1650) - The Virgin As The Woman Of The Apocalypse

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas lined.- The Woman of the Apocalypse (or the Woman Clothed with the Sun, in Greek: γυνὴ περιβεβλημένη τὸν ἥλιον; in Latin: Mulier amicta sole) is a figure often considered a reference to the Virgin Mary in Catholic theology, described in chapter 12 of the Apocalypse. Colonial painting, dominated by the Dominican, Franciscan and Augustinian clergy of the viceroyalties, endowed with impeccable theological training, is particularly open to eschatological themes linked to the world of the apocalypse and prophecy. The striking biblical metaphors acquire an unusual spiritual depth in the hands of artists trained by the New World Church.- Unframed image dimensions: 42 x 56 cm / 66 x 80 cm, with a superb custom-made, hand-gilded Baroque frame.- Galerie Montbaron includes a technical sheet prepared by a certified art historian with each lot. This sheet is sent digitally upon request.
