Spanish School (circa 1620) - The Immaculate Conception
Oil on canvas. Original canvas. The representation of the Immaculate Conception went through several stages before reaching the accomplished models of Bartolomé Esteban de Murillo in Seville at the end of the 17th century. This scene, remarkable for the prodigious delicacy of its brushwork and the beauty of the Virgin's face, uses a series of metaphors drawn from Scripture and the Litany of Loreto to emphasize the chastity of the conception, from the Ivory Tower (Turris Eburnea) in the lower left to the Enclosed Garden (Hortus Clausus) at the far end. A work of mastery, his balanced Mannerist portrait of Mary will enrich any collection of Old Master paintings. Dimensions of the image without frame: 75 x 93 cm / 91 x 109 cm with a magnificent frame.
