Green Tara, Bronze, Nepal, Early 20th Century
A patinated bronze sculpture depicting Green Tara (Śyamatara)—one of the most important female deities (bodhisattvas) in Tibetan and Tantric Buddhism. She is seated on a double lotus-shaped pedestal (padmapitha). Her right leg is extended downward in a gesture indicating that she is ready to provide immediate help to those in need (her foot rests on the lotus). Her right hand rests on her knee in the varadamudra (gesture of granting wishes/generosity). Her left hand, in the vitarkamudra (gesture of teaching or debate), holds the stem of a blue lotus (utpala) that blooms near her left shoulder. The figure wears rich jewelry (necklace, bracelets, earrings, tiara) as well as a lower garment adorned with engraved loop motifs (dhoti). Behind her head and across her back is a halo in the shape of loops (prabhamandala) adorned with a flaming motif along the edges.
