Pair Of "cabriolet" Armchairs With Medallion Backs From The Louis XVI Period, Stamped "jb Boulard"
Artist: Jb Boulard
A pair of superb Louis XVI-period cabriolet armchairs with medallion backs, signed JB Boulard.
Originally gilded, they were repainted white in the past. Traces of the beautiful gilding are still very much visible.
They rest on four turned legs, sheathed with serrated fluting.
Semicircular aprons with arched fronts. Molded crossbars and projecting disc-shaped spandrels.
The concave armrest supports are well defined, with fluted fronts and sides and a serrated fluting on the front.
The generously curved backrests and enveloping armrests make these comfortable and elegant chairs.
They are beautifully upholstered in high-quality linen and silk fabric in perfect condition.
Jean-Baptiste Boulard, a Parisian cabinetmaker, established his workshop on Rue de Cléry after obtaining his master’s certificate in 1754 and very quickly earned a great reputation thanks to the quality and originality of his work.
His works, in the Louis XV style, are numerous: bergère chairs, chairs, armchairs—whether cane-woven or upholstered—all crafted with the utmost care and made from the finest woods.
But it was especially after 1777 that Jean-Baptiste Boulard made a name for himself, when he became the King’s cabinetmaker, for whom he then worked assiduously, primarily in the Louis XVI style with no distinctive markings other than the pleated palmette carvings that are quite often found at the tops of his chairs’ legs. In addition to the abundant commissions from the Garde Meuble, he also worked for a more modest private clientele, for whom he crafted spacious and comfortable chairs with beautiful proportions, simply adorned with understated carvings.
After his death, his wife continued to fulfill the numerous requests from the crown until 1792 and then those from the imperial court until 1808. His son, Michel Jacques, succeeded him and worked on Rue de Cléry until 1823.
