A Six-panel Kanō School Folding Screen On Gold Leaf Depicting A Pair Of Red-crowned Cranes
An important antique six-panel folding screen from the Kanō School, executed in ink and colours on paper with gold leaf, depicting a pair of red-crowned cranes in a river landscape.
On the left, a waterfall descends beside the sinuous trunk of an ancient willow tree, flanked by a group of bamboo. One crane is depicted in flight above the water, while the other rests along the riverbank beneath the willow. On the right, chrysanthemums (kiku) bloom in shades of white, pink, yellow, and red.
The background is animated by broad clouds of applied gold leaf, which structure the composition and create a luminous decorative effect.
