Siegfried Berndtwasborn in Görlitz, Germany, in 1880. He began his studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts and later received a travel grant that allowed him to travel to Paris, Brussels, Antwerp, London, and, finally, Scotland.
It is believed that Berndt went to Scotland to study under Frank Morely Fletcher, who had become director of the Edinburgh College of Art in 1906, in order to learn how to create color woodcuts in the Japanese style. Berndt’s color woodcuts were modern for their time. He participated in numerous exhibitions.
In 2013, Andreas Albert published the first catalog raisonné, focusing on his color woodcuts.
