Mid-19th-century Limoges Cup And Saucer Signed By Jean Pouyat
Elegant French cup from mid-19th-century Limoges, signed by Jean Pouyat "1825–1900." The cup has a cylindrical geometric shape with straight sides, with the lower portion coated in a deep, glossy cobalt blue glaze, and the upper portion decorated with a sumptuous band of pure gold engraved in relief, featuring classic geometric and floral motifs, finished along the lower rim with a Greek fret pattern of small arches and dots. The interior of the cup is entirely white porcelain, while the handle is entirely gilded. The saucer faithfully mirrors the decorative palette of the cup, with a wide outer rim in glossy cobalt blue, followed by a broad band of fine gold entirely worked with the same geometric motif as the cup. The center of the saucer is white porcelain. Both the cup and the saucer are in excellent condition and are signed on the underside "J P L," indicating that it was produced in Limoges and decorated by Jean Pouyat, who was a leading figure in French porcelain, blending centuries-old traditions with innovative craftsmanship that has captivated collectors and enthusiasts worldwide. Known for his hand-painted designs, luxurious details in pure gold, and timeless aesthetic, this artist’s pieces have adorned banquet tables, display cases, and prestigious collections. It should be noted that both the cup and the saucer are in wonderful condition, including the gilding, and show no cracks or chips.
