Large Polychrome Statue Of Saint Expeditus, 18th-century Neapolitan School
A beautiful, large, full-relief carved wooden statue depicting Saint Expeditus, a young Roman martyr, shown standing in a contemplative pose. The saint is depicted dressed in ancient-style clothing, his body brought to life by the elegant drapery. The youthful face, with its delicate features, is particularly expressive. The hair, rendered in abundant locks, as well as the flowing movement of the fabrics, attest to the craftsmanship of a high-quality workshop. The statue retains its original polychrome paint, enhanced by gilded decorations, whose wear and craquelure attest to its age. Saint Expeditus held in his hand the crucifix, which is his traditional attribute; a large portion of it is missing here. The sculpture is executed in the round, entirely carved, and bears traces of its former installation on the reverse side as well as on the base. A few shrinkage cracks and old signs of wood-boring insects are visible, attesting to the age of the wood.Through its treatment of the face, the drapery, and the richness of its polychromy, this work can be linked to the tradition of 18th-century Neapolitan polychrome wood sculpture, particularly pieces produced by workshops active in the tradition of Giacomo Colombo and Nicola Fumo.A work of character, with a remarkable sculptural presence, from a former private collection. Condition: in good overall condition for its age, with wear and minor imperfections in the polychromy, old cracks in the wood, and imperfections on the crucifix.
