Ivory Miniature, Portrait Of Madame Sophie, Daughter Of Louis XV, Signed L. Masson — Late 19th Century
Artist: Louis Masson
An oval miniature painted in gouache on ivory, depicting Madame Sophie de France (1734–1782), the sixth daughter of Louis XV and Marie Leszczyńska, known at court as “Madame Sophie.” She is depicted in a three-quarter profile, with powdered hair pulled back and adorned with a bow, wearing a pink dress with a lace bodice embellished with a bouquet of blue flowers, holding a light-colored handkerchief, against a blue-green monochrome background. The finely chased gilded bronze medallion, surmounted by a ribbon bow, is mounted on a garnet-red velvet panel within a carved and gilded wooden frame decorated with foliage motifs. An old handwritten label on the reverse identifies the subject: “Miniature on ivory, Madame Sophie, daughter of Louis XV, by L. Masson,” confirmed by an engraved plaque reading “L. MASSON” affixed to the front of the mount. This miniature forms a pair with a portrait of Marie-Antoinette from the same workshop and with an identical mount, suggesting a set originally designed to represent the royal family.
