Saint George Slaying The Dragon, Fragment Of An 18th-century Sculpted Decoration

A rare fragment of carved and polychrome wood from the 18th century, likely from an ancient religious decoration. Amid a profusion of foliage, acanthus leaves, and volutes, Saint George confronts the dragon in a deeply openwork composition executed with great virtuosity.The traces of polychromy still visible—notably the magnificent turquoise in the recesses of the sculpture—bear witness to its original coloring.A work whose origin remains to be determined, but whose sculptural vocabulary strongly evokes the Alpine world: Tyrol, Austria, or southern Germany, in a Baroque or historicist style.
An earlier restoration of the left scroll is worth noting. A fragmentary piece, weathered by time, where the losses and traces of color tell almost as much as the sculpture itself.
