Gilded Wooden Tabernacle Door - Italy, 18th Century
A late 18th-century gold-gilded wooden tabernacle door. This type of door closed tabernacles in which the pyx (chalice for sacred functions) was placed in Christian Catholicism. The decoration features plant motifs such as tendrils with leaves and bunches of grapes joined with ears of wheat, classic Eucharistic symbols representing bread and wine, the body and blood of Christ, respectively. At the bottom, the branches are joined by a bow. The upper part ends in an arch.
