Spanish Virgin And Child 18th Century Gilded Wood Gold Leaf

Majestic religious statue representing the Virgin Mary and Child, of Spanish origin and dating from the 18th century. Carved from high-quality resinous wood, this work of devotion stands out with its generous dimensions: 100 cm in height and a weight of 40 kg, testifying to remarkable sculptural work. The Virgin is dressed in a long dress with ample pleats, entirely gilded with gold leaf, enhanced with a belt emphasizing the high waist. In her left hand she holds a long golden scepter with a pommel, symbol of her celestial royalty. The Child Jesus, carried on his right arm, raises his hand in blessing and holds a golden orb symbolizing his universal sovereignty. The faces, hands and feet are treated in polychrome in a beautiful beige-pink complexion, with expressive painted blue eyes and finely sculpted brown hair. Each figure is surmounted by a radiant halo in gilded metal (sunnimbus), with a striking decorative effect. Characteristic of Spanish Baroque sculpture, the back of the statue is hollowed out – a typical process aimed at preventing cracks in the wood and lightening the piece during liturgical processions. The whole presents authentic signs of age and use: flaking of the gilding and polychromy, cracks and small losses, which give this piece all its patina and authenticity. A rare and moving work of sacred art, ideal for a lover of religious art or an interior of character.
