"Pair Of Lion Candlesticks, Emile Gallé, Earthenware, Saint-clément Factory, Late 19th Century"
Large pair of lion candlesticks in glazed earthenware, hand-painted circa 1890. The majestic lions hold in their paws the crenellated summit of a medieval tower bearing the coat of arms of Lorraine. The Japanese-inspired decoration, known as Imari, is predominantly blue, red, and gold. The base is signed "EG croix de Lorraine, Gallé Nancy." In very good condition, with a small chip on the base and a few minor nicks that do not detract from the decoration. Emile Gallé (1846-1904), earthenware, Saint-Clément Manufactory, late 19th century. Signed: The Emile Gallé manufactory was renowned for its production of first-rate furniture and glassware. However, before creating his famous furniture and glass objects, Gallé participated in the design of earthenware, first at the Saint-Clément manufactory, then at his own. Emile Gallé loved walks in the wild woods and had his own small botanical garden. He hung signs above the door of his studio: "Our roots are deep in the forest, by the streams and among the moss."
