Young Neapolitan Woman, 19th Century Attributed To Pierre Vignal (1855–1925)
A charming late 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a young Neapolitan woman in traditional dress.
The young woman is depicted indoors, wearing a white blouse, a red bodice, and a wide red sash, as well as a green apron trimmed with a floral pattern. Beside her, a few pieces of tableware and a small bouquet tied with a green ribbon enliven the composition.
The painting bears an old, partially erased signature in the lower right corner, which we read as “Vignal.” Based on this reading, we attribute the work to Pierre Vignal (1855–1925), a French painter and watercolorist who traveled to Italy and depicted Naples and its surrounding region in particular.
Some signs of wear and small visible losses, consistent with the work’s age.
Presented in a beautiful antique frame made of molded and gilded wood.
