Directoire-period Side Table, Made Of Mahogany
Rare Directoire-period mahogany side table, likely of Russian or Baltic origin, circa 1795–1805
A rare and elegant Directoire-period side table or coffee table, crafted from mahogany and mahogany veneer, adorned with gilded and silver-plated bronze fittings.
It features a long, oblong top with rounded ends, encircled by a low rail and accented with metal strips. It rests on two cylindrical columns joined by an arched crossbar.
Each column rises from a substantial mahogany tripod base, ending in three fluted gilded bronze feet. The base features a remarkable zoomorphic decoration consisting of three fantastical birds with long, curved necks, likely stylized swans or cranes. The contrast between the silver-colored necks and the gilded wings and heads lends the piece great decorative richness.
With its design still rooted in the neoclassical style of the late 18th century, its dark mahogany, the two-tone finish of its metal fittings, and the particularly graphic nature of its animal-themed decoration, this table can be linked to pieces from the Directoire period, continuing the tradition of workshops in Russia or the Baltic regions—likely St. Petersburg—at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
A rare piece of furniture with harmonious proportions, suitable for use as a coffee table, freestanding console, or serving table.
