Louis XIV-style Coffee Table With Floral And Bird Marquetry – Late 17th Century

Magnificent center table in polychrome wood marquetry, Louis XIV period, dating from the late 17th century, circa 1680–1700.

It features a remarkable rectangular tabletop entirely inlaid, organized around a large central medallion decorated with a vase of flowers and birds, surrounded by rich foliage scrolls, bouquets, and stylized ornaments. The composition is framed by a wide, particularly decorative floral border, enriched with circular medallions and burl wood panels.

The marquetry, composed of various light and dark woods, is veneered onto a fir core, using a technique perfectly consistent with late 17th-century cabinetmaking.

The apron, also adorned with floral marquetry, rests on four sturdy, twisted turned legs, topped with ringed finials. They are joined by a large, dynamically shaped brace made of burl wood, centered with an oval medallion inlaid with a bouquet of flowers.

The decoration featuring a vase of flowers, birds, and foliage is part of the major trend in floral marquetry that developed in Europe during the second half of the 17th century, particularly under the influence of Dutch workshops, before experiencing a significant boom in French cabinetmaking during the reign of Louis XIV.

The underside of the table bears an interesting old engraved inscription: “Repaired by Granié Frères in Toulouse”. This inscription provides particularly interesting insight into the history of the piece. Granié Frères was one of the Toulouse-based furniture and restoration workshops active in the 19th century. Their earlier work attests that this table had already undergone, at that time, a careful restoration intended to ensure its preservation.

This mark is therefore not a manufacturer’s signature, but rather evidence of an earlier restoration that is perfectly integrated into the piece’s history.

In very good overall condition considering its age, with typical historical restorations.

A Louis XIV table of exceptional quality, notable for the richness of its marquetry, the striking design of its twisted legs, and the historical significance of its Toulouse restoration mark.
