Dutch Heemskerk Brass Candlestick – Early 17th Century
An elegant brass “Heemskerk” candlestick, made in the Netherlands, dating from the early 17th century.
The turned shaft features a harmonious succession of balusters and moldings, resting on a wide, slightly domed circular base. A wide intermediate candle holder completes the characteristic silhouette of this type of candlestick. The cylindrical upper section features a side opening designed to facilitate the removal of the remaining candle.
The construction and turning techniques correspond to models produced in the Netherlands in the early 17th century, generally referred to as “Heemskerk” candlesticks or candleholders.
Beautifully crafted, with antique brass displaying a warm golden patina; some signs of wear, small scratches, and irregularities consistent with the piece’s age. The underside retains the circular marks from the lathe, which are particularly interesting for appreciating the manufacturing technique.
