Traditional Melanesian Fishing Spear Head – Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea) – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
A rare multi-pronged fishing spear head (leister) from the Bismarck Archipelago, most likely New Britain or New Ireland, Papua New Guinea.
Handcrafted with bone or fish-spine prongs, bound with plant fibre and natural resin, and decorated with small white shell beads and red glass trade beads. These ornamental details indicate a prestige or ceremonial example rather than a purely utilitarian tool.
Beautifully preserved, with intact binding, resin, and decoration. A fine and authentic example of Oceanic craftsmanship.
Length: 39.5 cm
Materials: bone or fish spine, wood, plant fibre, resin, beads
Condition: very good, minor wear consistent with age
Period: late 19th – early 20th century
