Oil painting on canvas depicting the Großglockner massif, by the painter Willi Hans Schwarz. The composition is constructed using an Expressionist style, based on a clear formal synthesis and flat, dense areas of color.
In the foreground, the lower portion is defined on the left by rocky outcrops in shadow and on the right by a high slope from which a stylized summit cross emerges. The middle ground is entirely occupied by the glacier face and the pyramidal summit of the Großglockner, whose topographical features are defined by a chromatically varied application of color: areas of white, ochre, pink, and light blue depict the points where light refracts on the snowpack, flanked by cobalt blue and brown tones used for the rocky walls in shadow.
The outlines of the rocks and glacial masses are marked by sharp, dark contours. The sky is rendered with a uniform application of saturated blue that preserves the direction and texture of the brushstrokes. In the lower right corner, the brush-painted signature “W. H. Schwarz” is visible.
