Bronze Sculpture “genius And Light” – émile Picault

Artist: Emile Picault

A magnificent antique bronze sculpture titled “Genius and Light” by the French artist Émile Picault (1833–1915). This work is a characteristic example of the allegorical and symbolist style that contributed to Picault’s fame.

The work

The sculpture depicts a winged female figure, the “Genie,” seated gracefully on a rock formation adorned with stars. In her right hand, she triumphantly holds aloft a flaming torch, symbolizing the light of knowledge, progress, and inspiration.

The female figure is sculpted with great attention to detail. The flowing drapery and delicate facial features lend the piece an elegant and monumental appearance.

To her left stands an eagle, a traditional symbol of power, vision, freedom, and the divine. The combination of the female figure and the eagle creates a dynamic composition and reinforces the work’s allegorical nature.

Material and Finish

The work is cast in bronze and features a beautiful, warm, golden-brown patina. The quality of the craftsmanship is particularly evident in the details of the hair, clothing, wing feathers, the eagle, and the flame of the torch.

The sculpture rests on an integrated bronze base, which forms a harmonious element of the overall composition.

Inscriptions and Signature

On the front of the base, the title of the work is inscribed in relief in the bronze:

“ GÉNIE ET LVMIÉRE”

Note the use of the classical “V” in place of the “U” in “LVMIÉRE,” a form found in certain ancient bronze inscriptions.

The artist’s signature, “E. PICAULT,” is also present on the base of the sculpture.

Émile Picault

Émile Picault was a French sculptor particularly known for his allegorical, mythological, and historical bronze sculptures. His works are distinguished by their strong symbolic dimension, their elegant female figures, and the richness of their decorative details.

“Genius and Light” is a beautiful example of this artistic world, in which the themes of light, knowledge, inspiration, and power are expressed in a dramatic and refined manner in bronze.
