Sylvain Vigny : “a Couple With A Mandolin”

SylvainVigny (1903–1970) : “Couple with a Mandolin,” oil on canvas 50 x 61 cm, signed lower left and inscribed on the back, set in a more modern gilded frame with a canvas mat, 57 x 68 cm.
Vigny was a self-taught artist born in Austria who lived in Vienna and Parisbefore settling in Nice, where he remained until the end of his life and where hewas regularly exhibited at Jean Moulin’s gallery before the war.
Featured in numerous museums, he presents works of Expressionismtempered by the southern French sun—powerful yet very free at the same time.
Here, this “Couple with a Mandolin,” solemn in its composition, is vigorously painted in a very fluid oil that sculpts the figures like statues.
