Large Carved And Gilded Wooden Mirror With Rocaille Decoration – 18th Century
A large carved and gilded wooden mirror from the 18th century, featuring rich Rocaille decoration.
The frame, entirely carved, is adorned with openwork scrolls, foliage, flowers, shells, and spirals. The upper section is particularly elaborate, featuring an imposing asymmetrical pediment with the dynamic decoration characteristic of the Rocaille style.
The original gilding has developed a beautiful patina, with signs of wear, touch-ups, and small areas where the gilding has worn away, revealing the undercoat and wood in places.
The mirror retains its original two-part glass panel, displaying the discolorations, pitting, and wear on the tin visible in the photographs, which contribute to the piece’s overall character.
