Joé Descomps-cormier (1869–1950) – Large Centerpiece Made Of Patinated Terracotta
Joé Descomps-Cormier (1869–1950) – Large patinated terracotta centerpiece
Elegant patinated terracotta centerpiece signed Joé Descomps-Cormier, depicting two nude young women delicately leaning against a rocky mound, in a composition of great tenderness and remarkable balance.
The wide oval bowl is adorned with a high-relief decoration of foliage and fantastical mascarons, including an imposing bearded face occupying the front, lending the piece a Symbolist and Art Nouveau character. The quality of the modeling, the precision of the anatomy, and the expressiveness of the faces attest to the talent of Joé Descomps, a renowned French sculptor of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
This decorative work, which serves as both a sculpture and a centerpiece, perfectly illustrates the aesthetics of the Belle Époque and would be a fitting addition to a collection dedicated to Art Nouveau or French decorative arts.
The sculpture is signed "J. Descomps" on the decorative elements.
