Art Deco Glazed Ceramic Vase, Sèvres, Circa 1930
An ovoid-shaped glazed ceramic vase, made in Sèvres during the Art Deco period, circa 1930.
The body is adorned with a remarkable stylized floral design, consisting of large flowers with cream and yellow petals, accented with deep blue centers. The design, deliberately simplified and sharply outlined, stands out against a nuanced green background with marbled and speckled effects.
The neck is accented by a geometric frieze featuring cobalt-blue diamond motifs on a yellow-green background, while the base—slightly tapered and highlighted by circular ridges—echoes the green and blue tones of the piece as a whole.
The rich and vibrant glazed surface features beautiful variations in tone and texture that enhance the piece’s artisanal character. The contrast between the deep blues, rich greens, and luminous flowers gives the vase a particularly striking decorative presence, characteristic of the chromatic explorations in French ceramics of the interwar period.
The base bears the handwritten inscription “Sèvres”, accompanied by “Made in France” and a figurative studio mark. A second inscription, “Sèvres,” also appears on the foot.
This is likely a production from a private workshop in Sèvres, distinct from the National Manufactory, whose Art Deco creations were numerous and varied in the 1920s and 1930s
