Important Mazarine Chest Of Drawers Made Of Solid Cherry Wood – Louis XIV / Regency Period – Early 18th Century

A significant and spectacular chest of drawers known as the “Mazarine”, crafted from solid cherry wood; a French piece from the first third of the 18th century, likely originating from southeastern France.

It features a dynamic front with three wide drawers arranged in three rows. Each drawer is accented with molded and scalloped panels surrounding the bronze pull handles and lock openings, whose foliage design harmoniously complements the curves of the piece.

The chest of drawers is particularly distinguished by its highly elaborate architecture: the body is framed by four powerful, openwork buttresses, which project prominently and are shaped in curves and counter-curves. They are punctuated by vertical moldings and carved motifs, then extend to the floor via carved, ribbed legs.

This spectacular arrangement of the posts, combined with the arbalète-style front and the three rows of drawers, links the piece to the family of Mazarine chests, which first appeared at the end of Louis XIV’s reign and were further developed in the early 18th century.

The sides consist of large molded panels, topped with a carved stylized shell motif. The solid wood top is particularly noteworthy: assembled with panels and moldings, it follows the curve of the front while extending well beyond the sides.

The piece rests on a traditional frame, entirely pegged and assembled using traditional methods. The drawers, the solid frame, and the back made of wide planks are all hallmarks of 18th-century craftsmanship.

It features a beautiful antique honey-brown patina with reddish hues, which is particularly warm and reveals the natural grain of the cherry wood.

With its extraordinary dimensions, the imposing presence of its four openwork stiles, and the richness of its design, this chest of drawers is a particularly decorative and rare example of early 18th-century regional French furniture.

Wood gaps on the top.
