Louis XV Style Walnut Chest Of Drawers, Burgundy, 18th Century
An elegant Louis XV period commode in solid walnut, opening with a curved front and three drawers in three rows. The piece displays a beautiful harmony of proportions, with a flowing front highlighted by scalloped moldings. The sides are molded in a gendarme's hat pattern, resting on cabriole legs with simple finials. The uprights are highlighted with a molding carved from the same piece. The lower rail is adorned with a central shell carved in a fluid style, characteristic of regional production of the 18th century. The drawers are embellished with bronze mounts decorated in rocaille motifs and mascarons. Some of the drawer pulls and keyhole escutcheons are 18th century, while others were replaced or recast in the 19th century. It retains a very fine original patina, the walnut is warm and well-grained. Regional work attributable to Burgundy. 18th century, circa 1740–1770
