Green Crystal And Gilded Bronze Inkwell – Empire Style, Late 19th Century

A rectangular desk inkwell made from a large block of crystal or thick, emerald-green-tinted glass, cut and polished, set in a rich gilded bronze mount.

The openwork mount features the ornamental motifs typical of the Empire style: winged griffins facing each other, imperial eagles, palm leaves, laurel wreaths, and foliage scrolls. The rectangular base is accented by a frieze of laurel leaves in slight relief.

On the upper part, two winged Renommées in gilded bronze frame the central stopper. The stopper, which is domed and hinged, is surmounted by an eagle with outstretched wings. It reveals the opening of the reservoir carved into the thickness of the crystal.

The crystal block can be removed from its mount, allowing one to appreciate the quality and precision of its cut. The contrast between the deep green of the crystal and the gilded bronze creates a very beautiful decorative effect.

French or European work in the Empire style, dating from the late 19th century.
