This large painting, depicting a famous view of Venice with the entrance to the Grand Canal and the majestic Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute on the left, is a work signed by F. Guarana, an Italian landscape painter active between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, who specialized in creating evocative views of the lagoon city.
Although very few documented details are available regarding his biography, his signature appears on various works of art that have appeared on the international antiques market and at auction houses. He should not be confused with the famous 18th-century Venetian painters Jacopo Guarana and Vincenzo Guarana, exponents of the late Baroque and Neoclassical periods, from whom our painter is separated by more than a century, though he may be their direct descendant.
His works, distinguished by an excellent command of perspective and a fine brushstroke rich in architectural details, depict almost exclusively Venice’s most famous vistas, such as the Rialto Bridge, the Grand Canal, St. Mark’s Basin, and the Doge’s Palace.
The subject, in particular, echoes one of the famous 18th-century compositions by the master of Venetian landscape painting, Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto. In fact, it is quite common to find in his paintings—such as the one presented here—motifs that were famous in the 18th century among the masters of Venetian veduta painting, such as the aforementioned Canaletto, as well as Marieschi and Bellotto.

The composition is characterized by a rigorous use of perspective and an analytical rendering of light that highlights the architectural volumes—elements typical of the style of the great masters mentioned.
The canal is brought to life by characteristic boats of the era, such as gondolas and cargo ships, while on the right stands out the line of Venetian palaces overlooking the Grand Canal.
The canvas, in good condition, is set in a sumptuous carved and gilded wooden frame featuring floral motifs and Baroque-style decorations at the corners and along the edges.
