Wooden Panel Carved With A Dog And A Cat. Europe, 18th Century.

Artist: Gaston Nicod
The panel is carved from a single piece of oak; the high-relief carving depicts a dog and a cat fighting in front of what appears to be a fortified city. The eyes, made of glass paste, are inlaid. On two of the sides, the name “Gaston Nicod” is stamped in iron; he must have been the panel’s owner at some point. It seems unlikely that this is a sculptor’s name, as it is unusual for an artist to sign their work twice—and especially in this manner. Furthermore, the period does not lend itself to such a practice. On a second panel, carved with a bear and a lion and following this one, there are also traces of letters on the sides—likewise stamped with a hot iron—but these have been deliberately erased; however, an “A” is still discernible, and it is highly likely that this also refers to Gaston Nicod. It is reasonable to assume that these panels are not merely decorative whims; their composition suggests that they illustrate a story, a fable, or an allegory that is now difficult to identify. Good condition, beautiful antique patina, no restoration. 26x19x3.5 cm. Europe, 18th century or earlier.
