Antique Painting Saint Onophrius The Penitent Oil On Canvas '600 Original
Oil on canvas. 17th-century Central Italian school.
Iconography identifies this figure as the hermit saint Onofrio, who lived in the 4th century as an anchorite in the Egyptian desert: he is, in fact, depicted here in a rocky and desolate setting (typical of paintings that emphasize the themes of penance and the ascetic life) traditionally depicted as an elderly man with a long beard and white hair, almost completely naked (covered only by a loincloth made of leaves), kneeling, with his hands clasped in prayer or in a gesture of profound supplication directed upward, a rosary hanging from his arm, the Cross and an open book (the Bible) on the rock beside him—symbols of prayer and meditation.
The painting has undergone restoration and re-gilding in the past.
It is presented in a refurbished antique frame.
