The work belongs to the 1990s–2000s body of work by artist Walter Guidobaldi, known by his artist name Wal, and specifically to the “putti” series—sculptures in the round made of marble, bronze, resin, or terracotta—whether monumental or small in scale—in which the protagonists are mischievous cherubs engaged in games of dexterity.
Starting in the 1980s, Wal joined the ranks of the “Nuovi-nuovi,” artists characterized by a playful lightness—almost worthy of Palazzeschi—and by a revival of color, imagery, and craftsmanship, thus reacting against the overly “cold,” intellectualist climate that had taken hold in the 1970s around the aesthetics of so-called “conceptual” art.
