Landscape With Figures And Herd Antique Painting XVIII Century Original
Oil on canvas. 18th-century Central European school.
The vast, lush northern landscape is crossed by a small stream, along which, in the foreground, a herd of cows is drinking; of particular note is the shepherd, kneeling on the bank, saying a prayer; two other travelers, not far away, are watching him.
On the reverse side is a collection label, and the word “German” is handwritten on the stretcher bar, likely indicating its origin.
The painting is on a single layer of canvas, with its original stretcher and a period frame that has been regilded.
