Painting Attributed To Antonio Francesco Peruzzini: Landscape With Figures

Oil on canvas. This large composition depicts a landscape centered on a massive tree, whose sparse branches tower over the countryside below—a landscape crossed by a stream and brought to life by various figures of common folk engaged in their daily activities or resting; in the upper right stands a fortress, dominating the valley. Previously attributed to Peruzzini of the Marche region, the painting can undoubtedly be traced to his circle, due to its swift, loosely applied brushstrokes. Antonio Francesco specialized in landscape painting, influenced by Salvator Rosa and landscape artists such as Pietro Montanini and Pandolfo Reschi; he also drew further inspiration from Northern European painters active in Italy, particularly Pieter Mulier, known as “il Tempesta.” The originality of his painting is already evident in his early works, characterized by a rapid application of paint and an intense, brilliant color palette. In the early 1890s, Antonio Francesco Peruzzini’s long artistic collaboration with Alessandro Magnasco began, following their meeting in Milan, where Peruzzini had settled; from this period onward, his painting seems to break apart, evolving through forms that become more dynamic and light—almost fantastical—ultimately arriving at a style characterized by an ever-increasing disintegration of natural forms and their movement. Restored and re-stretched, the painting is presented in a period-style frame.
