In this evocative winter landscape, Licinio Barzanti (Forlì, 1857 – Como, 1944) explores the theme of snowfall by combining the sensibility of late-nineteenth-century Naturalism with a refined study of light in the post-Macchiaioli style. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence but having developed his craft through constant study from life, Barzanti distinguished himself on the art scene at the turn of the century for his celebrated floral compositions and, above all, for his mountain and lake landscapes, which were well received at major national exhibitions (Genoa, Florence, Milan) and by international collectors.

In this work, the vertical composition is skillfully structured around the slender, solemn rhythm of the bare tree trunks in the foreground: their austere lines and the intertwining branches guide the eye upward, creating a natural filter through which the snow-covered slope on the right and the mountain ridge fading into the distance on the left unfold. The true focal point of the painting, however, lies in its sophisticated color scheme. Barzanti does not depict the snowy surface as a uniform white blanket, but rather as a receptive and iridescent substance, traversed by the bluish shadows and violet hues of the ground. This cool palette is contrasted by the soft warmth of the pink and golden tones of the sky and the last few dry tree crowns—typical of the light at dawn or dusk—which imbues the entire scene with a clear, still, and silent atmosphere. The brushwork, always controlled yet rich in texture, conveys with equal effectiveness the roughness of the tree bark and the consistency of the snow piled up on the slopes, confirming the full artistic maturity of the Forlì-based artist.
