Sea view
Oil on canvas, cm 74.5 x 100.5
With frame cm 100 x 126
The arrival of the storm is announced on the left side of the canvas by the presence of clouds laden with rain. The waves, which crash against the coasts formed by high cliffs and make the white seagulls that were there fly up, communicate the sense of restlessness of nature and the imminent swell. At the centre of the painting is a boat depicted with great attention to detail, while on the horizon the arrival of other ships is partially concealed by the mist. On the boat you can see figures of sailors engaged in the management of the ship lapped by the waves. The whole scene is dominated by high cliffs and the force of nature, while you see a seaside village on their slopes. The sea was created using a wide range of colours based on shades of blue and green; rapid strokes rich in white paint the foam and the rippled surface of the waves. The landscape is largely occupied by the sky, in the lateral parts it is dark and stormy, while in the central part it is still clear and bright. The romantic approach of the sea view is evident: the strength of the sea, the succession of waves and the plumbeo sky recall the vision of a turbulent nature endowed with an uncountable force.
