Marquetry Coffee Table That Doubles As A Desk – Northern Italy, Late 18th Century

A rectangular coffee table that can double as a desk, crafted from walnut veneer and contrasting woods, and adorned with rich neoclassical marquetry.

The tabletop features a particularly refined geometric composition, centered around a large circular medallion with a radiating rosette. It is surrounded by veneer panels arranged in recesses and framed by friezes of stylized foliage as well as a wide border with geometric decoration.

The lower section, also entirely inlaid, opens at the front with a large drawer fitted with a pull knob. Its interior is lined with blue felt—likely added at a later date—to allow for the storage of documents, writing accessories, or small objects.

The table rests on four tapered legs with square cross-sections, ending in small feet. Their upper sections are adorned with delicate plant motifs in marquetry.

With its clean lines, slender tapered legs, and emphasis on polychrome wood decoration, this table is fully in keeping with the neoclassical style of the late 18th century. It can be linked to works from Northern Italy—likely Lombardy—influenced by the designs of Giuseppe Maggiolini and his circle.
