This match holder, referred to as "Bear in a Tree" in the pottery factory's catalogs, was created around 1876–77.
This rare piece is made of majolica, a fine earthenware coated with glazes colored by metal oxides.
The piece bears the number 620, the mold number.
On the side is a scraper for striking matches.
