Rare Cradle Rattle, Palais Royal, Dolphin & Crown, Silver & Mother-of-pearl, 19thc
Very interesting—here’s a lovely little treasure that will be a wonderful addition to your collection! It’s a cradle rattle, equipped with a ring for hanging. The handle, made of mother-of-pearl carved into the shape of a dolphin, is engraved with a blackened monogram on one side and a shield for a silver or gold inlay on the other—which, unfortunately, is missing. On each side is a mirror, allowing the child to catch a glimpse of their first reflections or play with the light.
The virolle and the rim of the cylindrical mirror are made of silver, topped by an openwork crown and ending in a hanging ring. The beveled mercury mirror’s border is decorated with a garland of leaves and a row of pearls. I found no hallmarks, but I guarantee the material of the object. All around, there must have been small bells, which are now missing.
A precious, high-quality, rare, and intriguing object; authentic.
Fair condition: the silver escutcheon is missing; there are gaps on the sides—likely where the bells were; a few dents; and the mirror’s finish is worn but still functional; restoration with tin soldering on the upper part of the bezel. Please take a close look at my detailed photos—I’m not hiding anything!
French craftsmanship, likely from the Palais Royal, dating from the early 19th century, circa 1820–1840, during the Restoration period.
Dimensions: 21 cm H x 8 cm diameter x 1.3 cm thick.
