18th Louis XVI Gilded Wood Frame With Laurel Wreath Frieze

The laurel wreath is a typical decorative motif of Neoclassicism, inspired by the classical art of Greece and Rome, which was rediscovered thanks to the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum. It symbolized glory, wisdom, victory, peace, and civic virtue. During the Louis XVI period, it was carved into frames, friezes, and mirrors made of gilded or lacquered wood, embroidered on tapestries, or painted on wall panels in court residences. It evoked moral grandeur and intellectual stability—ideals deeply cherished in an era that sought formal purity prior to the French Revolution.

Excellent condition; original gold leaf gilding is well preserved; minor signs of age; a small, old restoration on the ribbon of the bow.
