Giltwood Turban Stand, Ottmàn Empire 19th Century

Giltwood Turban Stand with Original Polychromy
Turban stand in carved and gilt wood, retaining its original polychromy beneath the shelf, in red and green.
Ottoman Empire, 19th century, or European “Turquerie”.

Very good overall condition, with minor losses to the gilding consistent with age and use.
Shelf depth: 30 cm.

Traditionally referred to as a turban stand, this type of piece was intended to hold a headdress or precious textile, or more generally to serve as a decorative wall support, suitable for displaying a small ornamental object, a bust, or a decorative element.
The original red and green polychromy preserved beneath the shelf corresponds to the colored grounds traditionally used to enhance and enliven gilding in decorative interiors from the late 18th century through the 19th century.
