Half-moon Console Table In Carved And Gilded Wood – Louis XVI Period, Late 18th Century

Elegant half-moon-shaped console table, crafted from finely carved and gilded wood, a French piece from the Louis XVI period, circa 1780.

The openwork band features a delicate frieze of small flowers set within scrollwork, accented by a row of pearls. It is centered by a large pleated ribbon bow, below which unfolds a substantial garland of flowers and foliage carved in high relief.

The two front legs, which are straight, tapered, and fluted, are adorned at the top with knotted floral pendants and, at the base, with water leaves. They are joined by a curved, molded crossbar punctuated by fluting. In the center rests an elegant lidded vase or brazier, topped with a pine cone and surrounded by cascading floral garlands. Its openwork handles, featuring a geometric pattern, add a particularly decorative neoclassical touch.

The console is topped with a thick, half-moon-shaped tabletop of gray marble veined with white, featuring a molded edge.

A ceremonial piece of furniture with an architecturally composed design and abundant decoration, characteristic of the neoclassical taste of the late reign of Louis XVI.

Condition: original gilding showing wear, chips, and touch-ups, revealing the base layer and preparatory work in places. Previous restorations and structural reinforcements are visible on the reverse and under the crossbar; some carved elements have been reattached or reinforced. Minor, normal wear on the marble. The piece remains highly decorative and exhibits beautiful authenticity.
