A leading figure in 19th-century Dauphiné painting, Jean Achard is considered the undisputed master of Dauphiné landscape painting and the founder of the Dauphiné School. Born in Voreppe, he devoted a large part of his work to the landscapes of the Isère region, whose atmosphere, light, and poetry he captured with rare sensitivity. His influence was decisive on an entire generation of painters, including Laurent Guétal, Ernest Victor Hareux, and Charles Bertier.

This delicate composition depicts an old farmhouse near Voreppe, nestled amid lush vegetation. A path draws the eye toward the building, while slender trees frame the scene and create a remarkable sense of depth and perspective. The light, filtering through the foliage, brings the path to life and reveals the full subtlety of Achard’s brushwork, alternating between transparencies, light impasto, and delicate nuances.
