Hector Hanoteau (1823–1890) was a student of Régis François Gignoux (1816–1882) in the early 1840s.
The painter, a native of the Nivernais region, exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1847 to 1882.
The Bénézit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors states in its entry on the painter: “He is a sincere artist who deserves the attention of art lovers.”
After a stay in Algeria in 1853, Hector Hanoteau became friends with Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) toward the end of the decade. Moreover, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris houses “Baigneuses,” which he painted in collaboration with the master from Ornans.
The museums in Bayonne, Bourges, Clamecy, Douai, Le Havre, Lille, and Nevers also hold works by him.
