American School. George E. Forster
Artist: George E. Forster
Georges E. Forster. Oil on paper mounted on board "the wasp's feast" unsigned. 28.1 X 21.5 cm. American school. George E. Forster (1817-1896) was born in Germany. The artist emigrated to the United States, where he pursued a fruitful career mainly in New York and Brooklyn in the 1850s.
Our painting is a perfect example of Forster's style, inspired by the Düsseldorf School, making a point of rendering tactile details: the bloom on the grapes, the velvety skin of the peaches and, very often, the addition of small insects to give life and realism to the scene.
In nineteenth-century still lifes, the wasp is a classic motif. Unlike the bee, associated with work and virtue, the wasp is attracted by the sweetness of ripe fruit. It often symbolizes the fragility of life or the passage of time.
Beautiful period wood and gilded stucco frame. Good condition.
4800 euros.
