Moroccan Dagger Known as a Koumya - Morocco, late 19th to early 20th century
A beautifully crafted Koumya featuring superb silver engraving.
Wooden handle with chiseled silver elements.
Chiseled silver scabbard with floral decoration.
Arabic inscriptions on the pommel and the scabbard.
On the left side of the pommel is inscribed the Basmala (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ)
On the right side of the pommel and on the scabbard is inscribed an excerpt from the Throne Verse (Ayat al-Kursi), Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 255:
Right side of the pommel: The beginning of Ayat al-Kursi (اللهُ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ) The scabbard: The end of Ayat al-Kursi (وَلاَ يَؤُودُهُ حِفْظُهُمَا وَهُوَ الْعَلِيُّ الْعَظِيمُ)
Which can be translated as
O Living, O Self-Subsisting
And their preservation is no burden to Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great
