Large fine English earthenware platter – Copeland & Garrett, Late Spode – circa 1835–1845

A very beautiful and significant serving platter in fine English earthenware, produced by the Copeland & Garrett factory, successor to the famous Spode company in Stoke-on-Trent.

Rectangular in shape with rounded corners and a wavy rim, this large platter features a remarkable design printed in gray-black on a white background. The central composition, inspired by naturalism and Oriental motifs, brings together exotic birds, swans, foliage, abundant flowers, and a vase of flowers set against a lakeside landscape. The whole is framed by a rich floral and rocaille border, which is particularly decorative.

The great finesse of the engraving, evident in the plumage, foliage, and play of light and shadow, attests to the quality of English pottery from the second quarter of the 19th century. This type of decoration was achieved through transfer printing, a technique in which the Staffordshire factories were among the most accomplished at the time.

This mark allows us to precisely date the piece to between 1833 and 1847, the period during which William Taylor Copeland and Thomas Garrett operated the former Spode factory under this trade name. The reference “Late Spode” directly recalls this prestigious lineage.

A second impressed mark, accompanied by the number 22, is also visible on the underside of the dish and likely corresponds to a shape or production reference.

This large platter, likely dating from 1835–1845, is a beautiful collector’s piece of early Victorian English ceramics.

It features an antique metal hanging system on the reverse, added at a later date to allow for wall mounting.

In very good overall condition, with the slight marks and minor irregularities inherent to its age.
