High-quality miniature depicting a young lady dressed as a gentleman, or ‘à lagarçonne’, as was fashionable during the period. The short hairstyle for ladieswas also known as ‘coiffure à la victime’ or ‘coiffure à la guillotine’,mimicking the preparation for execution. It was sometimes worn by ladiesmourning family members who were executed. Interesting that the lady also wearsclothes normally worn by men. Fascinating and rare survival.
In very good condition for its age.
