High-quality miniature depicting a young lady dressed as a gentleman, or ‘à la garçonne’, as was fashionable during the period. The short hairstyle for ladies was also known as ‘coiffure à la victime’ or ‘coiffure à la guillotine’, mimicking the preparation for execution. It was sometimes worn by ladies mourning family members who were executed. Interesting that the lady also wears clothes normally worn by men. Fascinating and rare survival.
In very good condition for its age.
