This atmospheric landscape is attributed to Louis-Gabriel Moreau (Paris 1740 – 1806 Paris). He is known as ‘Moreau l’Ainé’ (Moreau the Elder) to distinguish him from his younger brother, th painter Jean-Michel Moreau (1741–1814), known as ‘Moreau le Jeune’. Louis-Gabriel was taught by the landscape painter Pierre-Antoine Demachy, who taught him to depict the countryside around Paris. He first exhibited at the Salon de la Jeunesse in 1760. Paintings by Moreau are preserved in the Musée du Louvre, the Magnin Museum in Dijon and the Musée des Beaux Arts in Rouen.

This painting is in very good condition and has recently been professionally cleaned and restored.
