Born in Rome on October 4, 1827, Jacques André Albert Lugardon was the son of the history painter Jean-Léonard Lugardon. While still a child, he returned with his family to Geneva, where he received his first artistic training in his father's studio. Following his father's advice, he specialized in Alpine landscape painting and continued his studies under Alexandre Calame, one of the leading figures of the Swiss landscape school.

In 1849, Lugardon attended the Veterinary School in Lyon to deepen his knowledge of anatomy before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1851, where he studied in the studio of Ary Scheffer. Upon his return to Geneva, he was awarded the first prize by the Fine Arts Class in 1855 for his painting Pâturage (Pasture). This prestigious award, established to enable promising young artists to continue their studies in Paris or other major artistic centres, brought him early recognition.

A talented painter, lithographer, and passionate photographer, Lugardon also conducted pioneering research into instantaneous photography, with a particular interest in capturing the movements of both humans and animals. His work in this field was recognised in 1881 with a medal awarded by the Photographic Society of London.

Deeply involved in Geneva's artistic life, he served on the Committee of the Society of Friends of the Fine Arts of Geneva from 1872 to 1888 and became a member of the Geneva Fine Arts Commission in 1880.

Albert Lugardon exhibited extensively throughout Switzerland and participated in the Paris Universal Expositions of 1867, 1878, and 1889. Today, his works are held in several public collections, including The White Cow, preserved in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
